SPC Flooring Installation: The Simplest Guide
Core Mantra: Flat floor, Wall gap, Angle in, Score & Snap.
Just 4 Steps:
1. Prep the Floor (Most Important)
Flat: The subfloor must be flat (uneven spots cause squeaking or breaking).
Clean: The subfloor must be clean (even a single pebble can push up and damage the floor).
2. Start the First Row
Use Spacers: You must leave a 1/4 inch (5-8mm) gap against the wall (to allow for expansion). If you don't have professional spacers, use thick cardboard or scrap flooring.
Connect: Align the tongue and groove, insert at a 30-degree angle, and press flat.
3. Cutting & Staggering
How to Cut: Measure, score a line firmly with a utility knife, and snap it with your hands (like breaking a chocolate bar). No power saw needed.
How to Lay: Use the leftover piece cut from the first row to start the second row. Joints must be staggered (like a brick wall).
4. Tighten & Finish
Tap Tight: After placing a plank, use a scrap piece as a buffer block and gently hammer the seams tight.
Finish: Remove the wall spacers and install baseboards (skirting) to hide the gaps.
The Golden Rule (Avoid this mistake):
Never install the floor tight against the wall. You MUST leave an expansion gap, or the floor will buckle and pop up in the summer!
